WHAT ARE THE 6 MAIN CONCEPTS OF TGfU?
Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU; Bunger and Thorpe) was developed in 1982 as an alternative to the traditional “skills-based” physical education teaching model. The basic foundation of the TGfU concept states that if physical education teachers can improve their students understanding of game play, their skill performance will improve greatly. Some research has suggested that students who are taught using the TGfU model, develop a more holistic appreciation for games and are more intrinsically motivated in activities that involve decision making and tactics.
The 6 TGfU Concepts presented in this poster were brought forth by Butler et al in 2008 and expand on the concept that physical educators can teach their students skills and ideas by playing games.
This colorful TGfU “Concepts” PE poster serves as a modern visual displaying 6 TGfU Concepts in a kid friendly, easy to comprehend printable format. The posters come in a Zip folder with 2 Formats- PDF and JPEG (originally set for 8 ½ by 11 sheets) but they can easily be copied on a school or store Poster-Maker to convert to a large sized poster. You can then place it inside your gym or playing area for your students to see and for you to reference while you teach your daily PE lessons.

WHAT IS THE PROCESS FOR THE TGfU MODEL?

The displayed TGfU Model in the poster is an adaptation from research by Werner, Thorpe & Bunker (1996). The model uses the learner as the central focus with 6 fundamental TGfU processes and subsequent outcomes.

This “Applying the National PE Standards” Display Board has been uniquely developed as a valuable and attractive visual aid for standards based programs in physical education.
The problem with display boards in a gym is that they are often too small so the students, teachers, and visitors cannot read the information posted rendering it inadequate for its prime purpose. These Banners are designed to cover a large space on your gym wall or hallway leading in to your gym.
All that observe the Display Board can clearly see the attractive writing and graphics that make it up. Your students, administrators, colleagues and parents know that you are serious about establishing and maintaining a “Standards-Based” Program in physical education.
Each “Applying the National Standards" Banner (NASPE Standard's 1 through 5) is made up of 8 connecting 8 ½” by 11” sheets making a large banner. There are currently 5 National PE standards; therefore 5 large banners make up the Display Board (48 in all). Each banner is made up of the following components: 1. Standard Title, 2. The Standard wording, 3. Description of how the standard is implemented, and 4. Eye catching graphics that go along with the Standard. The “Applying the National PE Standards” Display Board is colorful but has a white background as to not use up too much ink when you print.
NEW- I have recently added a folder of "Non-Segregated" JPEG images of the banners for those that have a school poster maker or are willing to pay a company like Office Depot to print out poster-sized replications of the images. This alternate method for producing the large banners saves time but may not have the same quality as printing out the individual PDF 8 1/2 by 11 inch sheets on a color printer and constructing the banner by hand.
The wording and description used in the banners are helpful as a reference for you as a teacher and can be highlighted during PE lessons. The entire “Applying the National PE Standards” Display Board (made up of 5 Banners) is meant to be laminated and can be use for many years. This display board will be attention-grabbing and can be utilized as an effective teaching tool during your lessons.
HOW HARD DO I FEEL I AM EXERCISING!!!
This colorful “Intensity Awareness Scale ” poster is based on Borg's Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE) scale and highlights 10 color-coded “Exercise Zones” that we typically witness during daily PE classes. The poster is “Kid-Friendly” and helps students understand and verbally describe the intensity at which their body is working, i.e. how they feel physically and mentally during activity/exercise. They can then use that information to straightforwardly communicate back and forth with their teacher or coach. Each intensity awareness zone provides a description statement with an indicator statement and shows an example that’s students can easily relate to.
This poster is POWERFUL and VALUABLE! The file includes 4 different background colors (tan, green, lavender and printer friendly white), to match your personal preference or school’s gym colors. The posters are in both PDF and JPEG format (originally set for 8 ½ by 11 sheets) but they can easily be copied on a school or store Poster-Maker to convert to a large sized poster. You can then place it inside your gym or playing area for your students to see and for you to reference while you teach your daily physical education lessons.

COME ON BABY, DO THE LOCOMOTION!!!
The Locomotor Cards and Labyrinth Activity is great way for your students to improve their locomotor movement, build strength/endurance and have fun too!!! This activity was also put together to teach students to move, in a variety of ways, from POINT A TO POINT B.
The students are put in a labyrinth (a maze made with cones) inside a gym, classroom or an outside playing area and they perform a number of locomotor movements as they travel through it (to music). The students will recognize the locomotor movements from the signs and then they will read, follow and perform the appropriate cues for each of the movements based on the signs (included in this package).
The LOCOMOTOR MOVEMENT CARDS AND ACTIVITY PACKAGE includes the following:
1 Comprehensive Lesson Plan which includes; object of the lesson, NASPE Standards addressed, set up procedures, learning outcomes, essential questions, modification ideas, instructions for the activity, materials/resources, safety and assessment
1 Detailed Diagram of the Labyrinth set up
25 “LOCOMOTOR” MOVEMENT CARDS to be used inside the Labyrinth Activity – there are enough cards to do the activity several times using different LOCOMOTOR movements each lesson.
This Locomotor Labyrinth Activity is ideal as a PE Warm Up, a Fitness Unit Lesson, a Locomotor Movement Unit or possibly as a closer for a general PE class. Classroom teachers could also use this activity inside their classrooms or outside in a playing area such as a playground or field. The Locomotor Labyrinth and Cards have been designed for Kindergarten through 5th grade students.
The Locomotor Movement Labyrinth Activity and 25 Movement Cards requires very little equipment- several cones, polyspots, and/or gym lines to mark rows inside the Labyrinth is all you would need.
